In Three Sentences...

In Three Sentences is a game of great shortcutting, paraphrasing, and general murder of the classics. :o) Below, you will find three sentences (give or take) that give the most basic description of a well known book. From these sentences, you must guess which book I am summarizing for you.

A poor boy desperately wants two dogs, and gets them after saving enough money. The dogs catch raccoons, and one wins a beauty pageant. At the end of the story, both dogs have died, and a sacred plant grows over their graves.
